Five Montgomery County players were among the 37 South Central Conference baseball players who earned all-conference recognition for the 2020-21 season.
Hillsboro’s Drake Vogel was a first team selection, while teammates Hayden Grosenheider and Dillon Smail were second team picks. Hillsboro’s Deklan Riggs also made third team, joining Litchfield’s Jacob Frerichs on the squad.
Vogel, a junior infielder, led the Toppers in stolen bases (14) and batting average this past season, going 34-for-70 for a .486 clip. Vogel also had the second most runs scored (26), third most RBIs (18) and tied Smail for the most home runs (two).
Smail, also a junior infielder, batted .391 to finish second in hitting behind Vogel for Hillsboro. He also led the team in runs scored (32) and doubles (11). Smail also led the team in slugging percentage at .687, with Vogel finishing second at .642.
Grosenheider, a senior pitcher, has a 3.63 ERA and led the team in appearances with nine. He also struck out 32 batters (second on the team) and batters hit just .246 against him.
Riggs, a freshman, was selected as an infielder and batted .369 with 11 runs scored, 19 RBIs and four doubles. He also pitched well for the Toppers, leading the team in strikeouts with 43 and posting an ERA of 2.59 in his debut season.
Frerichs, a senior outfielder, joined Riggs on the third team, batting .386 to lead the Panthers. He also led the team in runs (11) and tied Jacob Budd for the team lead in doubles with four. Frerichs also pitched for the Panthers, leading the team in strikeouts with 41 in just 21.1 innings.
Roxana, who finished 5-4 on the season in fourth, would have the most honorees with six, while Gillespie (6-3), Vandalia (4-4) and Staunton (4-5) all had five. Greenville (5-3) and Hillsboro had four selections each, while conference champion Pana (7-2) finished with three. Carlinville (4-5) and Southwestern (3-6) both had two honorees, while Litchfield (2-7) had one.
Just over half of the selections (19) were seniors, meaning that next year’s all-conference squad will have a much different look.
