Members of the Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Department (HVFD) have finalized plans for their 63rd annual Christmas Basket Program. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 program will be conducted differently than it has in years past.
“This year has certainly presented new challenges for everyone, but adapting to changing conditions is something that characterizes the fire service,” said Firefighter Chris Sherer, HVFD business agent.
“Volunteers will not be placing collection tubs in Hillsboro schools as they normally do and the volunteers will not be following their long standing tradition of sounding the fire whistle to signal their Monday evening collection of food donations from area homes.”
This year the volunteers are requesting monetary donations only.
“Because we will not be collecting food this year, we will be relying on donations from the public to fund this year’s program,” Sherer explained.
Checks may be made payable to “HVFD Christmas Basket Program” and mailed to Hillsboro Fire Department, 101 South Broad Street in Hillsboro. They can also be dropped off in the night deposit slot at City Hall. Donations may also be given to any member of the department for delivery to the firehouse. Food donations will not be accepted.
Food baskets will be distributed on Saturday, Dec. 19, between 9 and 11 a.m. The volunteers will be providing contact-less delivery only. Recipients will not be allowed to pick up baskets at the fire station.
Applications for the Christmas Basket Program will be available at the Hillsboro Fire Department beginning Wednesday, Nov. 25. Residents of the Hillsboro Fire Department service area, which includes Hillsboro, Schram City and Butler, are welcome to apply. Applications must be submitted by Friday, Dec. 11, either by mail to the Hillsboro Fire Department or by dropping them off at City Hall in the night deposit slot.
Through the Christmas Basket Program, the volunteers typically spread holiday cheer to more than 135 area families each year.
