Fairy Jewell (White) Elam, 89, of Irving, died on Friday, Jan. 21, 2022, at her residence.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hough and Sons Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Funeral services will follow, beginning at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Elam was born Oct. 8, 1932, in Coffeen, to Charles and Lillie (McCaslin) White. She married Alfred F. Elam, Sr., and he preceded her in death in 2019.

She was a homemaker, and she and her husband opened a general store that later turned into J&A Country Kitchen in Braidwood.

Mrs. Elam is survived by one son, Merle (Ann) Elam of Coal City; two daughters, Bonnie Sue (Floyd) Scheifer of Irving and Rhonda Scheifer of Witt; eight grandchildren, Joanna (Shawn) Dames, Brian (Taushia) Elam, Stephanie (Ken) Smith, Rebecca (Brad) Wood, Jewell Ann (Keith Raymond) Scheifer, Kimberly (Colton Smith) Scheifer, Courtney (Andy) Bounds and Tristen (Caitlyn) Scheifer; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lucy Ross of Taylor Springs.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son in infancy, Alfred Elam, Jr.; one great-great-granddaughter, Ellie Lynnell Marie Scheifer; and nine siblings.

Memorials may be directed to the Montgomery County Cancer Association or Montgomery Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Taylor Springs.
