Elena Howarth, 95, of Virden, died on Friday, May 12, 2023, at her home.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16, at Airsman and Calvert Funeral Home in Virden. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Girard with Rev. Kelly Mitteis officiating. Burial will follow at Auburn Cemetery. Airsman and Calvert Funeral Home of Virden is assisting the family with arrangements. Mrs. Howarth was born on April 17, 1928, in Litchfield, daughter of William and Mathilda (Tiemann) Uchtman. She married George Howarth, and he preceded her in death.
Mrs. Howarth retired in 1991, from the State Board of Education,where she had served as secretary for the director for numerous years. After retirement, she spent several years making and selling crafts and gifts. She was a faithful member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Girard.
Mrs. Howarth is survived by sons Jim (Leora) Jones of Irving, Bill (Lorna) Jones of Hillsboro, Ned (Sonja) Jones of Virden, Geordie (Missy) Howarth of Virden; daughters, Mary “Jane”Jones of Virden, Alice (Mike) Hayes of Pleasant Plains and Carol Stout of Springfield; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughters, Martha Jones and Rachel Cornwell; three brothers and one sister.
