Christmas is coming to Nokomis this weekend, Saturday, Dec. 12. The Downtown Nokomis Association, aided by several factions of the community, have been hard at work to safely offer festive fun amid this year of uncertainty.
Christmas in Nokomis will kick off with the annual Christmas parade. Line up is behind Nokomis City Hall at 9:30 a.m. with the parade to begin at 10 a.m. The parade will travel down State Street (Main Street) and end at Fred B Johnson Park. Santa’s elves will be collecting letters to Santa from the children in attendance, during the parade, so be sure to come prepared.
After the parade, head over to the pagoda at Fred B Johnson Park where Mr. and Mrs. Claus will pass out holiday treats from 10 a.m. to noon.
The adults in attendance can finish checking items off their lists during the Christmas Shopping Walk from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is encouraged to walk door-to-door, making purchases, throughout downtown Nokomis.
The local businesses will have specials, door prizes and treats for shoppers.
Leading up to Saturday’s festivities, the Downtown Nokomis Association is hosting a holiday decorating competition for the local businesses and a coloring contest for children.
The coloring contest is available to children ages ten and under. The coloring pages can be picked up anytime and returned to the following businesses, New 2 You, Taylor Trading Co., Nokomis Fun Shop and Ugly Mugs Coffeehouse, where they will be displayed. Each location will pick a finalist and those will be taken to a judge, who will select the official contest winner on Thursday, Dec. 10. The four finalists will be entered into the grand prize, valued at $40. The grand prize winner will be announced after the Christmas in Nokomis parade on Saturday.
Businesses participating in the window decorating competition were asked to submit their decorated windows by Friday, Dec. 4. The photos are currently featured on the Downtown Nokomis Association page on Facebook and the public will be encouraged to vote by “liking” their favorite window. Voting will end at 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 11. The photo with the greatest amount of “likes” will win a cash prize of $100, with the winner to be announced at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
