Douglas “Doug” Leroy Galer, 90, died on Nov. 24, 2024, at Hillsboro Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, Dec. 13, from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at the Hillsboro Methodist Church, located at 537 Rountree Street in Hillsboro. The family invites friends of Mr. Galer to attend and share their favorite stories. Hough and Sons Funeral Home in Hillsboro is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Galer was born on Nov. 6, 1934, to his parents, Delford “Del” E. and Pauline E. (Burgess) Galer in Lancaster, WI. He attended Hillsboro High School, graduating with the class of 1954. After high school he entered the U.S. Army. Mr. Galer eventually began work for Hillsboro Glass for many years and then opened his own business, Galer’s Market, where he sold flowers and concrete lawn ornaments. He was a member of the Moose Club and the Sertoma Club.
Mr. Galer loved the sports of fishing and hunting, especially duck hunting, as well as the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. He enjoyed working outside, skiing and spending time teaching his children how to play the game of baseball. He was also an avid card player.
Mr. Galer married Janice Newberry in 1964, and she survives.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Galer is survived by his children, Guy (wife Kari) Galer of Pacific Grove, CA, Todd (wife Tanya) Galer of Naperville, Troy (wife Chari) Galer of Ft. Worth, TX, Lesley (husband Travis) Warmouth of Gilbert, AZ, and Dru (wife Lana) Galer of Ft. Worth, TX; and 11 grandchildren, including Cora Galer, Vivian Galer, Peter Galer, Matthew Galer, Abigail Galer, Madison Galer, Jordan Galer, Olivia Warmouth, Eliza Warmouth, Evelyn Galer and Alice Galer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Phillip “Phil” Galer and Gilbert Galer.
