Doris I. Zumwalt, 71

Doris Irene (Burris) Zumwalt, age 71, of Litchfield, died on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025, at 5:20 p.m. at St. Johns Hospital in Springfield.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, March 6, at Hough and Sons Funeral Home in Hillsboro at 11 a.m.

Mrs. Zumwalt was born on April 24, 1953, to her parents, Charles Edward and Theresa Irene (Gress) Burris in Hillsboro. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1971. On Nov. 29, 1971, she married her love, Howard Louis Zumwalt, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 4, 2023.

Mrs. Zumwalt enjoyed traveling, playing cards, reading her romantic novels, shopping for special antiques and had a passion for cooking. She was a lover of Italian and Chinese food but enjoyed the art of cooking anything for her family to enjoy. Her passion for cooking did not stop at home, and she brought it to her job at McDonald’s as the morning cook. She was also employed at Walmart in the clothing department.

Mrs. Zumwalt is survived by her children, daughters, Mary Zumwalt of Litchfield and Susan (Jerry) Longwell of Litchfield; son, John Zumwalt of Springfield, and a stepson, David Spensberger of Missouri; several grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara Lucykow of Hillsboro; brothers and sisters-in-law, Maureen Burris of Highland, Alice Wilson of Hillsboro, Barbara Burris of Hardin, Cathy Burris of Litchfield, Robert (Patty) Zumwalt of Litchfield, Michelle Zumwalt of Virden, Orville (Angela) Zumwalt of Girard, Patty (Denny) Allen of Hamel and Mona (Ralph) Alonzo of Pensacola, FL.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Zumwalt was preceded in death by her grandchildren, Christian Zumwalt and Jared Frailey; her sister, Mary Lou Blackwell; and sisters-in-law,  Rosetta Jett and Kathy Ferrari; brothers, Wayne Burris, Larry Burris, Charles Burris and Ronnie Burris; and half-brother, Jimmy Wilson,.
