Donald “Don” Young, 72, of Greenville, died on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2021, at HSHS Holy Family Hospital in Greenville.

Visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 7, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 8, beginning at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Greenville.

Mr. Young was born March 29, 1949, in Breese, to Ferdinand LeRoy and Viola Mary (Goewert) Young. He married Carolyn Walcott on Aug. 18, 1974, at Greenville First Presbyterian Church, and she preceded him in death on April 29, 2013.

He grew up in Breese, attended local schools and graduated from Breese High School. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in arts and education from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville.

During his career, Mr. Young served as a deputy sheriff for Clinton County. He then began his teaching career and taught in the Sorento School District for over 30 years. Following his retirement, he worked for the Bond County Sheriff’s Department in the jail.

He loved baseball and coached his son’s little league teams for many years. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing in his time off.

Mr. Young is survived by his daughter, Kim Young of Glen Carbon; son, Kyle (wife Jennifer) Young of Keyesport; and grandson, Graham Reymond.

In addition to his wife of 38 years, he was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Judy Ratermann.
