Dennis “Rock” Gene Dal Canton, 77, of Hillsboro, died at 7:17 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025, at Hillsboro Health in Hillsboro.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, Jan. 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Funeral mass will be held on Friday, Jan. 10, beginning at 10 a.m. Father Daniel Willenborg, pastor of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Hillsboro, will be officiating. Burial will be held at St. Agnes Catholic Cemetery in Hillsboro.
Mr. Dal Canton was born on Jan. 28, 1947, in Hillsboro to the late Eugene and Marion (Erp) Dal Canton. On March 11, 1972, Mr. Dal Canton married the love of his life, Sheila (Monte) Dal Canton at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Hillsboro. They were happily married for 52 years and together they raised their two daughters, Paula and Jody. He lived in Hillsboro his entire life and during that time he started at Hillsboro Glass and pursued his career as a mail carrier, starting in November of 1971. He retired from the Coffeen Post Office as a post master in 2004.
Mr. Dal Canton was very loyal to his community; he was a member of the Jaycees, Hillsboro Moose Lodge, K of C in Hillsboro and St. Agnes Catholic Church. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and enjoyed playing cards and gambling. He was the Little League baseball coach and also coached his daughter in softball. He was especially fond of watching his grandson play sports.
Mr. Dal Canton is survived by his wife, Sheila; two daughters, Paula Dal Canton of Litchfield and Jody (husband, Tony) Buntjer of Loves Park; four grandchildren, Nicole Buntjer, Megan Traylor Cantrell, Madison Buntjer and Ethan Buntjer; and eight great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Frank Monte.
