David William Young, Jr., 68, of rural Hillsboro, formerly of Litchfield, died on Saturday, June 5, 2021, at 8:15 a.m. at his residence.

Visitation will be held Monday, June 7, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, June 8, beginning at 11 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Litchfield with Bishop Lonnie Bruce officiating. Burial will follow at Crabtree Cemetery in Litchfield with military honors.

Mr. Young was born May 25, 1953, in Litchfield, to David William and Frances Pauline (Ivey) Young. He married Jodi Sue Favre in 1986, and they later divorced. He married Rose Marie Elizabeth (Herder) Wilson on June 29, 2004, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 2, 2013. He then married Jennie Lee (Hill) Gross Cobb on April 30, 2016, and she survives.

He graduated from Litchfield Community High School with the class of 1971. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

During his career, Mr. Young was employed at Owens-Brockway in Godfrey and as a supervisor for Hillsboro Glass Company for several years until the plant closed. He then worked for the State of Illinois as a claims processor, retiring in 2018.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Litchfield, where he served as first counselor in the branch presidency. He was also a member of the VFW Post 3912.

Mr. Young was well known in youth sports. He coached both boys’ and girls’ teams in baseball, softball, basketball and soccer. He also served on the Litchfield Community Unit School District #12 school board.

As an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, running and dirt biking.  He also enjoyed spoiling his grandchildren and was a lifelong Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Reds fan. He taught Hunter Safety since 2001.

In addition to his wife Jennie, Mr. Young is survived by his daughter, Jaime (Toby) Holbert of Hillsboro; son, Dakota (Heather Schuster) Young of Greenville; stepdaughter, Jessica Ward of New Castle, IN; stepson, Ryan Gross of St. Louis, MO; six grandchildren, Nolan and Emily Klump, Elmer Holbert IV, Lylah and Lydia Holbert and Nova Young; brothers, Paul Young, Doug Young and Michael (Brandy) Young, all of Litchfield, George (Jennifer) Markulakis and Bradley Markulakis; and sisters, Carla Edwards, Marcia Robinson and Mary (William) Werries, all of Litchfield.

He was preceded in death by his father; mother, Pauline (Ivey) Young Markulakis; and wife, Rose Young.
