Darrell Lee Schwab, 93 of rural Litchfield, died at 7:41 a.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2022, at his residence.  

Funeral services will begin at 12 noon on  Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield with the Rev. Jon Magnuson, pastor of Beacon Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery in Litchfield, with military honors at graveside.  Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.  Celebration of life will be held at a later time.

Mr. Schwab was born at home on the family farm in Honey Point Township, Macoupin County, west of Litchfield, to John Joseph and Emma Marie (Kuntzmann) Schwab on Jan. 21, 1928. He was a graduate of Litchfield Community High School with the Class of 1946, and served in the U.S. Army from Jan. 9, 1951 until he was honorably discharged on Jan. 8, 1953. He served in the Korean War as an aviation mechanic with the rank of corporal.  He married the former Joyce Anne Sturgeon on Aug. 13, 1955, at the Union Avenue Christian Church in Litchfield, and she survives.

Mr. Schwab was a life-long farmer.  He enjoyed and took great pride in raising beef cattle.  He was always willing to lend a hand to a neighbor or someone in an emergency situation by loaning out his equipment or a truck when they needed help.  He was the former chairman of the Macoupin County Soil and Water Conservation District, and was a collector of  Farmall M tractors.  He and his wife enjoyed traveling over to the Illinois River at Hardin on special occasions and enjoying lunch at Mel’s Riverdock, driving through the area of  “the land between the rivers.” They also enjoyed going to cattle sales in Perryville, MO.  Mr. Schwab always enjoyed visiting with his family and friends.

In addition to his wife, Joyce, he is survived by his sister, Carolyn Schwab and sister-in-law, Sharon Schwab, both of Litchfield; several nieces and nephews; and his dog “Buster.”  Additional survivors include special friends, Larry and Debbie White, Charlie and Kelly Sinclair.  

In addition to his parents, he was prececed in death by three brothers, Gene, Lyndal and Ronald Schwab; and three sisters, Melba Hartke, Maxine Nimmons and Joyce Vedder.
