Dan Keith Saathoff, 77, of Hillsboro, formerly of Panama, died at 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021, at Hillsboro Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Cremation rites were accorded.  A celebration of life service is set for Sunday, Feb. 20, from 1-4 p.m. at The Abbey on Broad in Hillsboro.  Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home in Hillsboro is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Saathoff was born on Sept. 25, 1944, in Sorento, the son of Lloyd Saathoff and Blanche (Hastings) Saathoff Spengeman.  He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1962, served in the U.S. Army for three years, and married Therese Ann Durbin on July 20, 1968, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Litchfield and she survives.

He worked at Consolidated Coal Mine in Coffeen, the Albers coal mine, then worked at Lewis & Clark Marine and Village Apartments in Hillsboro in maintenance.

He was a member of the Panama VFW where he served as past commander, and was Grisham Township road commissioner for 12 years.  He loved spending time with his family, ice fishing, hunting (especially bird hunting), sitting on the porch, playing cards, fast cars and making mulligan.  He could fix or build almost anything, and was always there when his family needed his help.  He took on everything with strength, courage and without complaints, even to the end.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Eric Saathoff (companion Cathy Ritzel) of St. Jacob; two daughters, Lori (husband Todd) Huber of Hillsboro, and Jill (husband Trevis) Brewer of Hillsboro; six grandchildren, Myranda Saathoff, Maggie Huber (fiance Dylan Murray), Dane Huber, Ayden Brewer, Peyton Brewer and Grayson Brewer; a great-grandchild, Alanna Saathoff; and two sisters, Vina Houchlei of Sorento and Gail (husband Earl) Huston of Hillsboro.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-father, Harold; and two sisters, Jeanette McGill and Brenda Kimbro.

Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.  Send condolences online through basspattondeanfh.com.
