County Teams Back On Track After COVID

Posted

After nearly two years since the last time they competed, it was finally time for the Hillsboro and Litchfield track teams to compete once again.

The two Rt. 16 rivals were joined by Pana at Hillsboro High School for the first meet of the abbreviated 2021 season.

It would be a good day for the Purple Panthers, who took first in the boys meet and second in the girls, finishing 20 points behind Pana.

The Litchfield boys would take first in eight events, including the 4x100 (48.68), 4x400 (3:49.50) and 4x800 (9:43.91) relays.

Individually, freshman Keenan Powell and senior Will Carlile both scored victories in the field events, with Powell jumping 6’0” in the high jump to beat teammate Cameron Crow by six inches and Carlile clearing 13’0” to beat teammate Paul Cowgill by three feet.

On the track, Brandon Malloy ran a 1:01.43 to win the 400, while Camden Quarton took first in 1600 (5:16.97) and second in the 800 (2:15.53). Sam Horn gave Litchfield another win in the distance races, winning the 3200 with a time of 12:25.75.

On the girls’ side, Carly Guinn and Carson Lemon took four of Litchfield’s seven wins, accounting for two individual victories each. Guinn won the high jump (1.62 meters) and triple jump (9.35 meters), while Lemon was first in the pole vault (8’6”) and 100 meter hurdles, where she ran a 18.40.

Litchfield’s other wins came on the track, including a victory in the 4x100 with a time of 55.18. Kendall Stewart and Ema Dively would pick up the other two victories, with Stewart running a 1:06.15 in the 400 and Dively running a 2:49.78 in the 800.

Litchfield was supposed to host its first meet on Tuesday, May 4, but weather got the better of the Panthers. That meet has been rescheduled for May 14. On Friday, May 7, the Panthers are scheduled to visit another group of Panthers, as they compete in Jerseyville.

Hillsboro

For Hillsboro, it was a day for a small group of athletes to get some experience. Junior Austin Page and freshman Cole Lenczyki were the only boys to compete, with two of their teammates, junior Magnus Wells and younger brother Zander, out due to wrestling commitments.

Page would take first in the triple jump with a mark of 10.15 meters, while also placing third in the 200 (25.78) and fourth in the 100 (12.43).

Lenczyki’s top finish was in the 200, where he took fifth with a time of 29.87. He also placed sixth in the 100 (14.31) and in the shot (9.05 meters).

On the girls’ side, Paitynn Wilson was the only Topper to hit the track, with standouts sisters Ashlynn and Kaci Papin both out due to injury and others missing due to the operetta. At full strength, senior Emma Miller and sophomores Sierra Compton and Meagan White will also be competing for Coach Son Clayton’s team.

Wilson competed in three events and had three top three finishes. In the 100, she was second with a time of 13.90, followed by a third place finish in the 200 with a time of 29.85. Wilson also did the triple jump, leaping 8.34 meters to place second. Hillsboro is scheduled to be back at their home track on Thursday, May 6, when they host Taylorville.
