The difference between the Hillsboro and Litchfield boys golf teams proved to be thinner than the blades of grass they played on Tuesday, Sept. 21, as the two Montgomery County teams took to the fairways of the Carlinville Country Club for a match with the host Cavaliers.
Through four players, the score was knotted at 167 for the two Route 16 rivals, with Litchfield led by medalist Tug Schwab’s 38 and Hillsboro paced by Dom Haggard just one stroke back.
The victory would go to the team with the best fifth score, which would be Tycen Thacker and Kelvin Dooley in this case. Thacker would shoot a 48 for the Toppers, giving them the win by two strokes over the Panthers and Dooley, who shot a respectable 50.
The closeness of the score shows just how good the two teams are playing right now as they prepare for the South Central Conference Tournament on Monday, Sept. 27, at Indian Springs Golf Course in Fillmore. The two county teams will need every bit of their skill, and then some, to dethrone reigning champion Vandalia, who is 18-0 on the year with several eye-popping performances in tournament play.
In Tuesday’s match, though, the focus was on the task at hand and all three teams played well, with Carlinville shooting a 180 to take third.
Drake Vogel and Preston Lyerla added a pair of 42s for Hillsboro, while Dillon Smail chipped in a 44 as the Toppers’ all-senior top four finished 23 strokes over par as a team. On the heels of a season best 46 on Monday, Austin Loskot turned in a solid 49 as the Hillsboro sixth man.
Ian Otto and A.J. Odle backed Schwab for the Panthers with a 40 and a 41, with Zach Boston contributing a 48 for the fourth scoring round. Keagan Marten was Litchfield’s sixth man with a 53, while Brawly Jacobs was lights out in a JV round, shooting a 3-over-par 39.
All told, 15 of the 19 players who hit the links in Carlinville on Tuesday would shoot in the 40s, with no one shooting higher than a 56.
Litchfield will play again this afternoon, Sept. 23, against East Alton-Wood River, Roxana, Marquette and Jerseyville at Belk Park, while Hillsboro’s next match is Monday, Sept. 27, at the aforementioned South Central Conference Tournament.
