Four members of the Hillsboro girls cross country team got their seasons off to a fast start on Tuesday, Sept. 1, as the quartet competed in the early meet at Loveless Park in Carlinville.
While they were one runner short of an official team score, the Topper runners put in a good showing at Carlinville, including two runners in the top ten.
Sisters Vanessa and Sierra Compton were close throughout the race and finished less than two seconds apart on Tuesday. Vanessa, who trailed her younger sister by a few feet for much of the race, took over the lead in the final stretch and took seventh with a time of 22:45.49. Sierra would be right behind her, and a second ahead of Carlinville’s Morgan Carrino, with a time of 22:47.27 to claim eighth.
In addition to the Compton siblings, Avery Smith and Jade Christian also ran for the Toppers. Smith ran an unofficial personal best of 24:47, which was inadvertently omitted from the final results. Smith finished just behind Pana’s Bailey Everley, who was 19th on the day, meaning the HHS sophomore added a top 20 finish to her strong start to the season.
Christian, one of four seniors on this year’s roster with Vanessa Compton, Alecia Miller and Kelsey Holtgrave, clocked in at 31:59.17 to take 36th overall.
The Hillsboro girls will look to improve on their times in their next meet, which will be on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Schneider Park in Brighton.
