Pawnee pitcher Kayleigh Cobb was nearly unhittable on Monday, May 3, as the Indians kept Nokomis from their first win streak of the season.
Fresh off a 19-0 victory over Metro-East Lutheran on April 27, the Redskins were making a bid for two straight before Cobb and company edged the home team in a 5-0 decision on Monday.
Cobb yielded just two hits and two walks, while striking out 14 in the winning effort. Both walks came in the first inning, but the Pawnee hurler managed to strike out the final two batters of the inning to snuff out the rally.
Nokomis wouldn’t get another batter on base until there were two outs in the seventh inning. Down 5-0, thanks in part to a two-run homer by Maya Rodriguez in the top of the seventh inning, Nokomis tried to string together a late rally when Aubrey Jaros singled and Karli Wanger doubled to move Jaros’ courtesy runner, Presley Mehochko, to third.
Unfortunately, that’s where the rally stopped as the Indians got the final out to improve to 5-2 on the season.
While she ended up with the loss, Jaros was solid on the mound, allowing one run in the first, fourth and sixth in addition to the two-run homer by Rodriguez. Jaros scattered 10 hits through her seven innings of work, striking out one and walking two.
Nokomis’ chance to rebound the next day against Greenville was cancelled due to rain on Tuesday. The Redskins will try to play the Comets again on May 14.
If weather permits, Nokomis will host Morrisonville on Thursday, May 6, followed by a trip to Mohawk Territory on Friday, May 7, to complete the home-and-home series.
