Clavin’s Best Pushes Nokomis Past 'Cats


Ben Clavin scored a career best 22 points and hit five three-pointers in Nokomis’ 60-35 win over Mt. Olive on Friday, Feb. 19.

The Redskins led 9-8 after one quarter, but tacked on 11 points to their lead in the second quarter as five different players scored for Coach Dan DeWerff’s club to make it 25-13 at the break. Freshman Reece Lohman, who scored his first varsity points in the first quarter on a free throw, added six points in the second quarter and led Nokomis in scoring at the half with nine.

While Lohman led the show in the first half, the seniors shined in the third quarter as Clavin and Seth Johnson took over. The pair combined for 17 of Nokomis’ 19 points (Lohman had the other two), with Clavin hitting four threes and Johnson contributing six points.

The offensive exhibition resulted in a 45-23 lead for the Redskins, who coasted to a 25-point win eight minutes later.

Clavin scored 17 of his team-best 22 in the second half as Nokomis improved to 4-2 on the season. Reece Lohman finished with 15 points, while Seth Johnson added 12 points and six assists.

Jake Johnson would chip in eight points and seven rebounds, while Kendall Knodle (two) and Nolan Himes (one) finished out the scoring.

Trent Markezich led Mt. Olive in scoring with 14 points, hitting three of the Wildcats’ seven three-pointers in the game.

Nokomis, who fell to Hillsboro on Feb. 20 to move to 4-3, will take on East Alton-Wood River on Monday, Feb. 22 and Springfield Lutheran on Tuesday, Feb. 23, with both games to be played in Nokomis.
