Charles “Chuck” Alfred O’Malley, 93, of Nokomis, died on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022, surrounded by his children.

Visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church in Nokomis. An additional visitation will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church. Funeral Mass will follow, beginning at 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will take space at Calvary Cemetery in Nokomis. Stiehl-Dawson Funeral Home in Nokomis is assisting the family.

Mr. O’Malley was born April 18, 1928, in their home in Audubon Township, to William and Celia (Brown) O’Malley. He married Karel DeWerff Grunenwald on April 12, 1969, and she survives.

He attended Star School in Witt through eighth grade, where he was valedictorian due to his other classmate failing. He graduated from Witt High School in 1944.

Mr. O’Malley served in the U.S. Army for two years, and was stationed in Ohm, Germany. When he returned, he farmed with his father and spent time in carpentry with his uncle Francis “Skeek” O’Malley. He also owned O’Malley’s Lounge for several years with his brother Dennis.

He eventually took over the family farm and married his wife and became a stepfather to Jody. He retired from farming in 1993, then began roofing with John DeWerff’s crew, which he loved to do.

Mr. O’Malley was a member of the American Legion, served on the Nokomis Elevator Board for several years, and attended St. Louis Catholic Church until his health prevented him from doing so the last few months of his life.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, chasing the 300 game in bowling for many years, and being pranked by his roofing buddies. He will be long remembered as someone who loved to make people laugh.

In addition to his wife, Mr. O’Malley is survived by his children, Angie (Curt) Barker of Camdenton, MO, and their children, Madison (Kelsey) Barker of Springfield and Michaela Barker of Champaign; Charlie (Gia) O’Malley and their daughters, Allyson and Abbygail of Nokomis; Jody (Michael) Lang of Athens, WI, and their children, Matt (Jen) Lang of Wausau, WI, Kyle (Christina) Lang of McFarland, WI, and Heidi (Paul) Schmidt of Washington; nine great-grandchildren; and brothers, Donald and Dennis (Doris) O’Malley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Billy and Jerald; and sister, Dorothy Anne (Wayne) Kottwitz.
