Carlyle Defense Keys Win Over Panthers

Posted

A pesky man-to-man defense interrupted the Litchfield Lady Panthers bid for their first win of the season as Coach Janelle Kuhn’s Carlyle Lady Indians pressured their way to a 53-25 win in opening round play of the five-team Litchfield High School Girls Basketball Round Robin Tournament played Saturday, Nov. 20, in Simmons Gym.

Nokomis opened play with a convincing 72-22 decision over Southwestern. This year’s sponsor for the annual event are The Bank & Trust Co., McDonald’s and John Blank of Shelter Insurance.

The five day tournament resumes Monday with Carlyle and Nokomis facing off at 6 p.m., followed by Staunton and Southwestern. Carlyle and Southwestern will lead off Tuesday night’s action at 6 p.m. followed by Litchfield and Staunton.

Against Litchfield, the Lady Indians rang up seven three-point baskets in the game, five of which came in the first half as they built a convincing 31-13 lead at the intermission.

Sophia Hoffmann led the charge with two treys in the first quarter and she added another in the second and third periods. Hoffman finished as the game’s leading scorer with 18 points.

She was assisted by Raelyn Harris who added 11 points, nine of which came from behind the arc in the first half. Lera Schmeink also added her name to double digit scoring with 10 points.

Shots were hard to come by in the first quarter against the pressure defense as Carlyle outscored the Panthers 17-7. Carly Guinn, Lily Braasch and Laura Boston all found the bottom of the net for two and Braasch added a charity toss.

Carlyle rolled up another 14 points in the second period and the Panthers were unable to match their first quarter production as Guinn, Elise Walch and Boston accounted for all six of the Lady Panther points while Harris registered two treys, Hoffmann added a two-point basket and a third trey and Lera Schmeink had a basket and free throw for Carlyle.

Using their defense to create offense, Carlyle again held the upper hand in the third quarter as they outscored Litchfield 15-7 and led by 24 at the end of three.

Laura Boston scored six of her game high 10 points in the period as she was able to find some space in the paint to operate.

But the Panther offense was shut down in the final eight minutes as freshman Emma Diveley was the sole contributor in the scorebook with three free throws. Harris and Schmeink scored Carlyle’s only baskets in the quarter while Jacie Pershing added three free throws.

Laura Boston was the leading scorer for Litchfield with 10 points. She had four rebounds, an assist and a steal. Emma Walch also pulled down four rebounds, had three steals and an assist.

Carly Guinn and Elise Walch each scored four points and Emma Diveley and Lily Braasch contributed three apiece.

The duo also had three and two steals respectively. Gina Painter did not score, however she came off the bench and grabbed three rebounds, had three defensive picks and a solo assist. Lily Braasch had three points, three rebounds and two steals.

Hailey Rentz converted a free throw, pulled down two rebounds, had an assist and a steal. As a team, the Panthers had 21 rebounds, 16 steals and six assists.
