With Staunton shut down due to COVID, Friday’s match at Timber Lakes was minus a team as Litchfield and Mt. Olive squared off in girls golf action on Aug. 20.
The Lady Panthers would be the only school with a full team, but that didn’t stop them from putting up a solid 187 on the night.
Laura Boston was lights out for the Panthers as she earned medalist honors with a 1-over-par 37. Carly Guinn would back her teammate, shooting a 40 for a solid number two score.
The Lady Panthers also got a 52 from Hailey Rentz and a 58 from Lauren Monke to round out the scoring, while Charlotte Gardner (60) and Olivia Fleming (62) also played for Litchfield.
The match in Macoupin County was a warm-up for the Marquette Blastoff, an 18-team, 18-hole tournament held the next day at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course in Alton.Litchfield finished 14th in the loaded field, shooting a 429 on the day.
Boston again led the Panthers, who were without Carly Guinn for the match. The LHS junior shot a solid 87 on the day, putting her 16th in the field, just five strokes out of tenth spot, held by Lauren Suhl of Belleville East.
Hailey Rentz also made the top 50 in the field of more than 100, breaking 100 with a 99 to finish 42nd overall.
Olivia Fleming (121) and Alyssa Loyd (125) added the third and fourth scores for Litchfield, while Lauren Monke chipped in a 132 for the Panthers as well.
Alton Marquette earned the overall team title with a 313, boosted by medalist Gracie Piar. Piar shot a 6-under-par 66 on the day, four strokes better than runner up Reagan Martin of O’Fallon and 12 better than third place finisher Sophia Florek of Mascoutah.
O’Fallon finished seven strokes behind the Explorers in the team standings, followed by Effingham St. Anthony (343), Waterloo (353) and Belleville East (370) rounding out the top five.
Litchfield was supposed to play Tuesday at home against Hillsboro, Civic Memorial and Roxana, but the excessive heat forced the cancellation of that match.
The Lady Panthers are now off until Sept. 1, when they will have their home opener against Auburn, Greenville, Roxana and Vandalia at the Litchfield Country Club.
