He had already been a state champion twice this year, but now Camron Bone can add national champion to his list of accomplishments.
Bone, the nine-year-old son of Mac and Stacey Bone of Litchfield, took first place in the Micro Mini division at the AMA Hillclimb Grand Nationals, hosted by the Pioneer Motorcycle Club in Waterford, OH on Sept. 18-20.
Going up against riders from Illinois, Ohio, Minnesota, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Massachusetts and Kentucky, Bone was one of just four racers to make it up the hill in his group.
After making it 301 feet in his first run, Bone blazed up the hill, making it to the top in 12.631 seconds. Second place would go to his racing buddy, Max Durbin of Mt. Olive, who finished in a time of 14.711.
Mattoon’s Jace McKay would make it a clean sweep of the top three spots for Illinois riders as he finished in a time of 15.410 to take third.
Cam’s younger brother Hank also competed in the Micro Mini division and finished 11th with a best run of 132 feet.
The national championship trophy, which is an inch or two taller than the rider that won it, wasn’t the only accolade Bone earned at nationals. He would also race in the Mini Junior division and finished fifth overall. His time of 11.977 was less than 1.2 seconds behind the winner, Charlie Engnes of Beldenville, WI.
Tucker Durbin of Mt. Olive also ran in the Mini Junior division and placed 17th with a best run of 310 feet.
Bone and the Durbins competed in the 65cc class as well. Bone would be one of 15 riders to reach the top, doing so in 13.827 seconds to finish eighth overall. Tucker Durbin would place 17th with a distance of 280 feet, while Max Durbin was 18th with a distance of 263 feet.
Another Litchfield rider, Brawly Jacobs, would compete in the Mini Senior division and placed fourth with a best run of 300 feet. Jacobs also ran in the 200cc class and placed 15th with a best time of 11.04.
Bone, who is sponsored by Action Powersports, Litchfield National Bank and Country Financial Agent Cory Evans, is currently first in the AMA District 17 standings in the 50cc division.
There are two more weekends of racing on the D17 hillclimb schedule as riders look forward to the King City Dirt Riders event on Sept. 26, and a weekend in Cayuga, IN, on Oct. 3-4, for the Pleasure Riders Motorcycle Club event.
