Betty Jean Gurley, 88, of Hillsboro, died on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at Hillsboro Area Hospital.
There are no services planned at this time.
Mrs. Gurley was born the daughter of Paul L. and Eileen M. (Redding) Collins on Sept. 24, 1936, in Hillsboro. She graduated from Hillsboro High School and went on to Capital Area School of Nursing where she obtained her credentials to work in the nursing field. She worked for several area nursing homes. Mrs. Gurley was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.
Mrs. Gurley’s love for caring for others extended far past her work and into her family life. She was a proud maternal figure to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Life’s simple treasures, such as an afternoon with the grandchildren or enjoying the entertainment of a TV game show/western film, were some of what brought Betty her greatest joy.
Mrs. Gurley was preceded in death by her dear husband, Myrl Gurley; beloved daughters, Cheryl Payne and Vickie Cherry; grandsons, Matthew and Jacob Huber; siblings, Larry Collins and Colleen Gates; and son-in-law, Richard Payne.
Mrs. Gurley is survived by her grandchildren, Eric (wife, Nicole) Huber of Coffeen, Ryan (wife, Kelli Jo) Payne of Auburn, Rachel (husband, Ken) Payne-Grinolds of Chatham, Chris (significant other, Alex) Payne of Hillsboro, and Caleb (wife, Andrea) Payne of Hillsboro; several great-grandchildren; a few great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other loving family members and friends; and her caregiver, Judy Ross, whom the family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to for her love and generosity shown to Mrs. Gurley throughout these last several years. The friendship and care given to Betty will never be forgotten, and the family of Mrs. Gurley could not be more honored to have had someone so loving in Mrs. Gurley’s corner.
