Mrs. Hammond was born May 20, 1935, in Blackwater, VA, in a cabin in the woods, a daughter of Evan Dudley Wallen and Betty Willis, and the stepmother who raised her, Euna Wallen. She married John Edward “Ed” Hammond on Aug. 26, 1953, in the backwoods in Union County, SC.

She attended primary school in Virginia, and received an eighth grade education before leaving and working on the family farm. Several years later, she went back to obtain her GED at the age of 65. She retired from Roller Derby, where she spent 20-plus years working on the factory line, cutting the material used for the top of the skate.

She especially liked traveling and taking road trips to Minnesota to go fishing, and South Carolina to visit her family and go to the beach. More than anything, she enjoyed her family and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Phyllis Hammond of Litchfield, Mary Ellen (Lisa Olson) Hammond of Dixon, David Hammond of Springfield and Danial Hammond of Litchfield; grandchildren, Jamie (Sam) Brandon, Nathan and Jonathan Hammond, and Nick and Mali McNice; and ten great-grandchildren; a sister, Leo Bumgardner of Whitmire, SC; and brother, E.B. Wallen of Whitmire, SC.

In addition to her parents, stepmother and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Patrick McNice.
