Allen L. “Smitty” Smith, 87, of Vandalia, died on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at SBL Fayette County Hospital, LTC in Vandalia.

Visitation will be held Saturday, March 5, from 10 to 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Mulberry Grove. Funeral services will follow, beginning at 11 a.m. at the church with Brother Doug Bell officiating. Burial will be held at Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia with military rites conducted by the Crawford-Hale American Legion Post #95 in Vandalia and Brownstown VFW Post #9770.

Mr. Smith was born May 14, 1934, in Fayette County, to Herman F. and Erma V. (Dooley) Smith-Browning. He married Joyce Alberta Ellis on March 4, 1955, in Mulberry Grove, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 18, 2022.

During his career, he served as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 28 years and owned and operated Smitty’s Monument Lettering in Vandalia for 60 years.

Mr. Smith served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War era. He was a member of the American Legion Post #95 in Vandalia and the First Baptist Church in Mulberry Grove.

He is survived by his son, Stan (Julie) Smith of Memphis, TN; daughter, Vicky (Gerald) Largent of Vandalia; grandchildren, Sara (Keith) Caldieraro, Heather (John) Garrison, Tim (Tracee) Largent; great-grandchildren, Macy, Jase and Jenner Largent, Annly, Isla and Ellis Garrison, Nailah and Zailyn Farmer and Bailey and Tyler Caldieraro; and one great-great-grandchild, Dominic Crump.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Meda Bingham.
