Montgomery County athletes made up almost a third of the representatives on the 2020-21 South Central Conference all-conference girls soccer team, with Litchfield posting six and Hillsboro adding five.

Thirty-five players across eight teams were honored, including 12 on this year’s first team. Both Hillsboro and Litchfield would have two players each on the first team as Jordan Ramey, Maddie Diamond, Vanessa Compton and Layne Rupert earned top honors.

Ramey and Compton were defensive stalwarts for Litchfield and Hillsboro respectively in their senior seasons, while Diamond was the Panthers’ leading scorer, notching 13 goals in her final year at LHS. Rupert, who was a sophomore last season, also led her team in scoring with 20 goals for Hillsboro.

Seniors Nikya Harston of Hillsboro and Izzy Ray of Litchfield earned second team all-conference honors. Harston was the other anchor for the Hillsboro defense, while Ray led Litchfield scored a goal and led the team in assists.

The remaining five would be third team selections, including Litchfield’s senior goalkeeper Becky Painter, who had two shutouts in 13 games for the Panthers.

Joining her were fellow LHS seniors Allison Marburger and Karly Kruse. Marburger was the other half of the 1-2 defensive punch with Ramey, while Kruse was second in scoring for the Panthers with eight goals.

Hillsboro freshman Kinley Richardson and sophomore Sally Mattson also earned third team honors, marking their first times on the all-conference list in their prep careers. Richardson showed a nose for the goal as she found the back of the net 13 times, while Mattson showed the ability to do it all, with three goals, five assists and a knack for dispossessing her opponents.

Litchfield’s six honorees was second most to Roxana, who had seven in their final year in the SCC. Both Hillsboro and Carlinville would have five selections apiece, followed by Staunton with four and Pana and Southwestern with three each.
