Don Downs of Hillsboro has been selected for this year's Service to Mankind Award by the Hillsboro Sertoma Club.
The awards dinner will be held Thursday, May 2, at the Hillsboro Lions Club starting at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are available from any Sertoma member or at The Journal-News office. Cost for the event is $15.
Jim Hewitt of Hillsboro and high school classmate of Downs, will be the featured speaker. Both graduated in 1985.
Downs and his wife, Gail, have been married for 27 years. They have two children. Dalton is a plumber for Bondurant Plumbing in Hillsboro, and Lauren will graduate in May from MacMurray College as a registered nurse.
Downs has been actively engaged in volunteering for many years around Hillsboro, working on projects with the Hillsboro Moose Club, Montgomery County Cancer Association, Imagine Hillsboro, Hillsboro Sports Association and many others.
He is a member of the Hillsboro City Council and is commissioner of streets and public improvements.
As a Moose member for 30 years, he worked in helping with the physical improvements, including painting and remodeling. He has also served on their board and also volunteers there as bartender.
In his 13 years with the Hillsboro Sports Association, he is constantly working on maintenance projects and repairs at the complex.
For Imagine Hillsboro, he's been the Grinch at the Christmas celebration and opening, and is an active member of the Imagine Hillsboro Volunteer Committee.
Downs is also a member of the Bost Hill Cemetery Board.
The MCCA has seen him as emcee for their annual Birthday Party and Celebration of Life. He has also been a fundraiser for "Dancing With The Stars" for the Stamp Out Cancer team.
Downs has been involved in efforts throughout the community to clean up and beautify Hillsboro, including weeding, mowing and picking up trash when he sees it.
