The Morrisonville High School baseball team opened up its season in Taylorville on Tuesday, March 12 and gave the Tornadoes all they could handle before falling to their neighbors by a 6-2 final score.
The Mohawks, who co-op for baseball with Lincolnwood, would match the Tornadoes with seven hits, but a four-run fourth inning broke a 2-2 tie and gave Taylorville the win.
After a scoreless first, Taylorville got on the board first with a single, a double and a sacrifice fly that drove in Karrick Pembroke from third for the game's first run.
Morrisonville starter Andrew Skinner would walk the next batter and got the second out of the inning on a fielder's choice, but Taylorville would score on an error to make it 2-0.
The Mohawks would get both of those runs back in the top of the third inning as Evan Hopper hit a two-run home run to left field. Jhadyn Walker, who doubled to lead off the inning, also scored on Hoppers' blast.
Reliever Kyle Bloome would load the bases with two outs in the bottom of the third, but got out of trouble and the score remained tied after three.
Taylorville would pick up some momentum though, with reliever Kyle Foraker striking out the side in the top of the fourth, then doubling in the third at-bat of the bottom half of the inning to score two runs for Taylorville. Foraker's courtesy runner, Austin Herkert, would come around to score after a walk and a ground out, with Taylorville adding a fourth run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Bloome would get out of the inning with a fielder's choice and a ground ball to short, but Taylorville held a 6-2 advantage with three innings to play.
It looked as if Morrisonville would rally in the top of the fifth, after Shawn Goebel reached on an error, Hopper singled and Dade Pitchford walked, but Blake Donnan conjured up a strikeout to end the inning with the bases loaded.
Michael Jones would come on in relief of Bloome for Morrisonville and allowed just one hit, a sixth inning leadoff single, from the seven batters he faced. Unfortunately, Donnan was just as untouchable as he struck out the side in the sixth and seventh to end Morrisonville's hopes of a rally.
Evan Hopper would lead the Mohawks offensively with two singles to go along with his two-run dinger. Dade Pitchford also had two hits and a walk in the game, while Andrew Skinner and Jhadyn Walker had a single and a double to finish out the hit column.
Skinner struck out two and allowed two runs, one earned, in his mound debut. Bloome took the loss, giving up three earned runs on three hits. Morrisonville's next game is at home against Hillsboro on March 14.
