Merle Ernest Vogel, 86, of Hillsboro, died at 5:05 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at Hillsboro Area Hospital.
A memorial gathering will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday May 18, at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Military Rites will follow at Donnellson Cemetery. Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home in Hillsboro is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mr Vogel was born on Dec. 8, 1936, in Hillsboro, to Ernest and Hazel (Micenhiemer) Vogel. He married Viola Charlotte Shaffer, they later divorced.
Mr. Vogel was a graduate of Hillsboro High School. Aside from his time in the United States Army, he was a lifelong resident of the Hillsboro area. During his career Mr. Vogel was a 20 year veteran of the U.S. Army, a truck driver, owned Cajun’s Tavern and helped at Vogel Plumbing, which his son owns. He was a member of the Professional Kennel Club and loved to coon hunt, duck hunt and fish.
Mr. Vogel is survived by children, Rick (wife, Barb) Vogel of Hillsboro, Keith (wife, Sandi) Vogel of Hillsboro, Mike (wife, Deana) Vogel of Raymond, Judy (husband, Dallas) Jett of Hillsboro, Nicole (Fiancé, Tony Lile)Vogel of Hillsboro and Angie Vogel of Hillsboro; 20 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; brother Burl Vogel of Hillsboro; and sister Bonnie Boston of Hillsboro.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William Vogel and Robert Vogel; two sisters, Mercedes Lessman and Betty Ott; and two grandsons.
