In a very brief special meeting on Friday evening, March 1, members of the Litchfield School Board unanimously voted to hire Dr. Greggory Fuerstenau as the new district superintendent, beginning on July 1 with a three-year contract. All board members were present except for Julie Abel, who participated by phone.
Dr. Fuerstenau of Taylorville is currently the superintedent of the Taylorville School District. He will replace interim superintendent John Mullet, who will continue to work for the Litchfield district until the end of June.
A graduate of Black Hills State University in South Dakota, Dr. Fuerstenau earned his bachelor of science degree in physical education in 1982 and his bachelor of science degree in education in 1984. He earned his master of science degree in exercise science from Western Illinois University in 1985 and his education specialist degree in education administration from Chadron State College in Nebraska in 1995. In 1999, he earned his doctor of education degree in education administration from the University of South Dakota.
Dr. Fuerstenau started his education career as a teacher and coach at St. Martin's Academy in Rapid City, SD, from 1984 to 1986. He would also serve as a teacher and coach for the Polo School District in Orient, SD, from 1986 to 1988. From 1988-1991, he served as a recreation specialist for Campbell County Parks and Recreation Department in Gillette, WY, but would return to education in 1991 as a teacher, athletic director and coach at Crazy Horse Indian School in Wanblee, SD for two years.
From 1993 to 1996, he served as an elementary and middle school principal for Red Cloud Indian School in Pine Ridge, SD, and as superintendent and secondary principal at Gayville-Volin School District in Gayville, SD, from 1996 to 1998.
Before moving to Taylorville, Dr. Fuerstenau would serve as superintendent at Corning Community Schools in Corning, IA from 1998 to 2003 and at North Cedar Community Schools in Stanwood, IA from 2003 to 2006. Since that time, Dr. Fuerstenau has served as the superintendent for the Taylorville School District.
While in Taylorville, Dr. Fuerstenau has been part of the Taylorville Kiwanis, Taylorville Optimist, Christian County YMCA Board, Taylorville Chamber of Commerce, Taylorville Memorial Hospital Foundation, Taylorville Development Association, Christian County Economic Development, Mid-State Special Education and Christian Region Special Education Cooperative.
The special meeting of the Litchfield School Board lasted only a few minutes. They will hold their regular monthly meeting on Thursday evening, March 21, beginning at 6 p.m.
