Laverne “Gene” Eugene Taylor, age 87, of Irving, died Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at his home.
Services will be held Friday, April 12, 2024, at Hough and Sons Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 12 p.m. with a funeral service to follow at 1 p.m. with Randy White of Open Arms Fellowship officiating. Burial will be in Irving Cemetery. Hough and Sons Funeral Home in Hillsboro is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Taylor was born on Sept. 14, 1936, in Irving to his parents Carl and Kathryn (Altevogt) Taylor. He attended Irving and Hillsboro High School and graduated with the class of 1956. Mr. Taylor joined the U.S. Navy and was on the 7th Fleet and was stationed in Hawaii, Japan and Australia. For his career, Mr. Taylor was a truck driver, coal miner and a heavy equipment operator at rock quarries.
He married Wanda Elam on June 26, 1959, and she survives.
Mr. Taylor was a member of the Irving Masonic Lodge, Laborers Union 965, and the Lutheran Church in Irving.
Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife Wanda; children Mark “Steve” Stephen Taylor and Carl Eugene Taylor; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; children Lola “Cheeta” Durbin and Tim “Timmy” Taylor; grandchildren Gina Dvorak, Brianne Dvorak and Larry Dvorak, as well as two others in infancy; and siblings Russell Taylor, Bradley Holmes, Donna Barker and Margaret Greeley.
