Lady Lancers Score First Victory

Posted

The Lincolnwood High School softball team picked up a big 9-7 win over New Berlin on Thursday, March 21, for their first victory of the season.

Both teams would score twice in the opening inning, with Sidney Glick leading off the game with a walk and Cassie Krager getting a base hit two batters later. Glick and Krager would both come around to score on an RBI single by Sadie Slightom to give Lincolnwood the early lead.

New Berlin would get their two runs on two hits, a walk and an error as the score stood at 2-2 after the opening frame.

Lincolnwood starter Sydney Herman and New Berlin starter Alex King would both get through the next two innings unscathed, but the back-and-forth of the scoreboard continued in the third inning.

Katelyn Payne singled to lead off the fourth, then moved up a base on an error by the New Berlin shortstop.

After the Pretzels got the first out of the inning, Glick singled to drive in Payne and make it 3-2. Brittney Slightom would follow up with a single of her own, but New Berlin would get the next two outs to end the threat with runners on first and third.

The Pretzels would come back though, getting four singles and an RBI sacrifice fly in the first six at-bats of the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead.

Down 4-3, Lincolnwood looked for a way to get back on top. The inning looked doomed from the start as Maggie McClelland walked, but was erased on a 4-6-3 double play to give the Pretzels two outs.

But then Marisa Webb singled to center to give the Lancers new hope. Both Payne and Desi Pitchford would reach base on errors, as would Glick to keep the rally going. With two outs, Brittney Slightom would double to clear the bases and make it a 7-4 lead in Lincolnwood's favor. Slightom would get thrown out trying to advance to third, but the damage was done.

The fifth inning would be the difference maker as the two teams took turns scoring in the final two innings in the same fashion that they did in the first four frames.

Lincolnwood scored in the sixth on an error and an RBI single by Shelby Hattenbach, while New Berlin kept it close with a run in the bottom of the sixth as well.

Back-to-back-to-back singles by Payne, Pitchford and Glick would make it 9-5 in the Lancers' favor as Lincolnwood held a four run lead going into the final inning.

New Berlin would get two runs back in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying runs on, but Sadie Slightom would come on in relief of Herman and collect the final two outs.

Herman would get the win, striking out three and allowing four earned runs on nine hits and four walks. Slightom would preserve the win, striking out the last batter she faced for the save.

Both Glick and Brittney Slightom would have three hits apiece, with Slightom picking up a double and Glick walking for a perfect day at the plate. Glick also scored twice and drove in two, while Slightom had one RBI.

Katelyn Payne also had two hits and reached on an error, scoring three times on the day, while Sadie Slightom drove in two runs and Marisa Webb plated one.

Lincolnwood nearly picked up their second win on Saturday, as they gave Riverton a game on their home field before falling 4-2.

As they did in New Berlin, the Lancers scored first as Cassie Krager drove in a pair of runs to give her team a 2-0 lead. The Hawks would answer though, scoring three runs on RBIs by Leah Foreman and Neely Rogers to take the lead.

Riverton would tack on an insurance run in the fifth as the game turned into a pitcher's duel between Rogers and Sadie Slightom. Rogers would strike out seven and allow three hits in the win, while Slightom struck out nine and allowed six hits in the tough luck loss.

The Lancers have a challenging week ahead of them with a pair of home games against Pana on Monday, March 25, and Pleasant Plains on Tuesday, March 26.
