Jean Joy Hulbert, 99, of Nokomis, died on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Nokomis Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. 

No funeral services are planned at this time. Cremation rites have been accorded. Sutton Funeral Home in Nokomis is assisting the family with with arrangements.

Mrs. Hulbert was born on Nov.  28, 1923, in Nokomis, the daughter of Glen and Bessie Davidson.  She graduated from Nokomis High School with the Class of 1942. She married Lloyd William “Bill” Hulbert on Nov. 13, 1943, in Visalia, CA, where Mr. Hulbert was a cadet in the United States Army Air Corps. The couple was stationed in California, New Mexico and Texas as he completed pilot training before being sent to the South Pacific.  He preceded her in death on March 23, 2006.

Mrs. Hulbert was a 75-year member of the Eastern Star. She loved to travel, and always said she wished her husband had stayed in the service, so they could have been stationed in more places.  Mrs. Hulbert took her first trip by train to Washington, D.C. at two years old and her last trip at 93 to Europe on a river cruise.

Mr. and Mrs. Hulbert owned Hulbert Hardware in Nokomis, where she worked in the store and kept the books.  After selling the business to their son, Gary, she became a homemaker.  She was very active in various groups and loved her card clubs.

Mrs. Hulbert is survived by her children, Gary (Clarann) Hulbert of Nokomis and Norman Hulbert of Irvine, TX; granddaughter, Kelcy (Michael) Voegele of Mascoutah; nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Irene Clark of Nokomis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and siblings, Roy Davidson, Leslie Davidson, Glennis O’Malley and Wanetta Schievenin.
