Gloria Jean Schmitt, 68, of Springfield, died on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2018, at 2:55 p.m. at her residence.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Dec. 6, beginning at 11 a.m. at Highland City Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. R.W. "Billy" Blackmon, pastor of Highland Southern Baptist Church, officiating. Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home  in Highland is assisting the family.

Ms. Schmitt was born Feb. 24, 1950, in Highland, to Raymond O. and Beulah H. (McCain) Schmitt.

She and her family resided in Marine until she was ten years old, then moved to White City near Mt. Olive. She graduated  from Mt. Olive High School with the class of 1968, and later attended a business college.

Ms. Schmitt began working for the State of Illinois and moved to Springfield, where she lived for the remainder of her life. She retired from the Department of Human Services - Disabilities and Rehabilitation Services for the State of Illinois in 2002.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed crocheting.

Ms. Schmitt is survived by two brothers, Roland F. "Sonny" (Phyllis) Schmitt of Staunton and Arnold A. "Buddy" (Ruth Ann) Schmitt of Walshville; two sisters, Joyce A. (Robert) Hamer of Greenville, SC, and Rae Marie Bokamp of Springfield; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father on Sept. 2, 1981, and her mother on Sept. 11, 2002.
