Frederick "Fred" Ronald Gates, 83, of Hillsboro, died on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018, at 12:50 p.m. at his residence.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Nov. 8, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Funeral services will follow, beginning at 7 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Randy Sands, pastor of Free Methodist Church in Hillsboro, officiating.
Mr. Gates was born July 26, 1935, in Springfield, to Roy and Elma (Hart) Gates. He married Colleen Collins on Sept. 26, 1970, in Springfield, and she survives.
He attended Feitshans High School in Springfield, later becoming an entrepreneur as he owned and operated Gates Pizza. He was also employed at many restaurants in the area.
A resident of Hillsboro during his lifetime, Mr. Gates was a member of the Hillsboro Lions Club, where he previously served as president. He loved drawing, bowling, and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Frederick R. Gates, Jr. of New Mexico, Les Gates of Springfield, Debbie (wife Elizabeth) Otter and Jerry, Jason and Michael Gates, all of Hillsboro; eight grandchildren, Jessica (Joe Wittenmyer) Otter, Jennifer (husband Josh) Jeffers, Jackie (Jason Hockett) Naugle, Ann (husband Zach) McIntyre, Lacey (Tim Cyprian) Ginger, Lauren Ginger, Isaiah Gates and Faith Bolyard; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Gates was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Cathy Otter; three brothers; and two sisters.
