David E. Smith, 61 of Girard, died on  Saturday, June 24, 2023, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 29, at the First Christian Church in  Girard, with Rich McElfresh and Shawn Burgess presiding. Burial will follow in Girard Cemetery in Girard. Davis-Anderson Funeral Home in Girard is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mr. Smith was born on July 7, 1961, in Taylorville, a son of Mitchell E. and Mary Ann (Pitchford) Smith. He married Lori Kemp on July 25, 1981, at the Oak Leaf Country Club in Girard.

Mr. Smith graduated from Girard High School with the class of 1979. He was the refrigeration branch manager and project engineer for Statco-DSI where he worked for 25 years. Mr. Smith’s work ethic and effectiveness was unparalleled. Outside of his profession he was even more impactful. Mr. Smith was exceedingly kind and generous. He would drop anything to give someone a hand.

Mr. Smith loved coaching youth football. He loved all his players like they were his kids. His passion and enthusiasm was contagious. Mr. Smith loved golfing with his sons every chance he got. He loved his wife of 41 years from the moment he met her. Mr. Smith loved his family intensely. He always remained close with all of his siblings and would see them as much as possible. Mr. Smith would help his sons with any house project they had often neglecting his own projects in the process.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Smith is survived by his mother; children, Tyler D. (Megan) Smith of Virden and Derek A. (Chelsey) Smith of Williamsville; grandchildren, Kye David, Kendrek, Azlyn and Tevin; siblings, Diana (Brett) Brown of Girard, Randy (Colean) Smith of Girard, Dawn (Eric) Webb of Raymond and Danielle (Kyle) Marshall of Farmersville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; brother, Daniel; grandparents, Roscoe and Gladys Pitchford; and grandmother, Ruby Foster.
