Josephine Elizabeth “Betty” Sumpter, 82, of Atwater, formerly of Litchfield, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2023, in Pleasant Plains at the home of her granddaughter.

Funeral services for Mrs. Sumpter will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct 15, at Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield. Burial will be in Bethel Ridge Cemetery in Atwater. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service. Plummer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sumpter was born Dec. 2, 1940, a daughter of Johnnes Rudolph Max and Ollie Ethel (Wham) Sendig. She graduated from Litchfield Community High School with the class of 1959. She married William Otto Sumpter on Aug. 17, 1958 at St. Timothy United Methodist Church in Litchfield, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 23, 2020.

Mrs. Sumpter was employed for many years by the Illinois Secretary of State Drivers License Facility as an examiner. She was an active member of St. Timothy United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school. Mrs. Sumpter was a member of the Macoupin County Farm Bureau and of the Litchfield Boat and Ski Club. She was a Girl Scout and Brownie Troop leader for several years. Mrs. Sumpter enjoyed gardening, baking and decorating cakes, and cooking for large family gatherings.

Mrs. Sumpter is survived by a son, David (Kelly) Sumpter, of Litchfield; six grandchildren, Jennifer (Craig) Rimar, Steven (Britanie) Sumpter, Kristina (Josh) Waggoner, Daniel (Sarah) Sumpter, Jonathan (Kimberly) Sumpter and Samantha (Dennis) Hamilton; two stepgrandsons, Zachary and Brady Christensen; 16 great-grandchildren, Madison, Molly and Morgan Rimar, Nora and Everly Sumpter, Eli, Isaak, and Charlotte Waggoner, Levi and Hannah Sumpter, Brooklynn, William and Mackenzie Sumpter; Zoey, Dennis IV and Olivia Hamilton.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Sumpter was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Sumpter-Zoschke on May 14, 2019; brothers Orville Beasley, George Beasley, Bill Beasley and Jim Beasley; and sisters Bertha Henry and Louise Huffman.
